Shorthand for LuxuryStation Independent, Lower East Side, NY 2011
Shorthand for Luxury is an installation comprised of three sumi ink drawings shown against a backdrop of vinyl wallpaper. The damask-like wallpaper is created from luxury brands that draw on traditions of heraldry and royalty. The sumi ink drawings on top bring together trademarks, harvested from the web, that use imagery from three different animals, spiders, panthers and snakes, that are often consider powerful or spiritual in non-western contexts.
This installation was shown as part of Vandana Jain's first solo exhibition at Station Independent on the Lower East Side.
